This is a spectacular trail within a 20-minute drive from Downtown Halifax. Epic Fox Lake Trail in Bedford, Nova Scotia, goes through a beautiful forest and has incredible lake views. This hike also includes a tipi and some amazing rocks.
This Fox Lake Trail is gorgeous! We started a bit late and, as a reward, watched a magnificent sunset. By the way, hiking in winter has its perks! It was easier to navigate with the snow and it was bright even after sunset. I’m also not afraid to meet a bear on a winter hike, which would concern me in this wilderness area in warmer months.
Check out my YouTube video from the Fox Lake Trail in Bedford, Nova Scotia. In it, I share the approximate locations of the key points (like the tipi or the Fox Lake Look-off) and stunning shots from this outdoor adventure.
Visiting this place could be a wonderful experience. However, this outdoor adventure, like any other, requires some knowledge about the area and its challenges. Check out some good-to-know things about this hike below.
Important information about the Fox Lake Trail
- Trail type – loop/out-and-back (you’re mostly using the same path, but there are some alternative ways on your hike back)

The Fox Lake Trail is mostly an easy hike but could be hard to follow. You’ll need to use a map on this one. The trail isn’t marked, and it’s easy to get lost, so check if you’re still on the right path as often as possible. The All Trails app is very helpful on this one.
The trail could be icy, so be careful if hiking in winter and wear good hiking boots. The terrain is rocky in some places.
The only challenging part of the Fox Lake Trail was the steep hill leading to Fox Lake Look-off and Tipi. It wasn’t too hard, but we had to use extra caution because of the ice and snow.
This Fox Lake Trail is located in the same Blue Mountains – Birch Cove Lakes Wilderness Area as the stunning Maskwa Trails Charlie’s Lake Loop, but it’s better to access it from a different parking lot.
