This spectacular hike is within a 15-minute drive from Downtown Halifax. It’s a spectacular trail with gorgeous lake views, an abandoned cabin, a magical forest, and many incredible details to discover with every step you take.

This hike is utterly beautiful. Every twist and turn of the trail reveals new surprises—moss-covered rocks, intertwined roots, and stunning lake views. However, there are a few things you should know before attempting this gorgeous hike
Important information about Maskwa Trails – Charlies Lake in Halifax, Nova Scotia
- Trail type – loop
- Distance – 4.3 km (according to the AllTrails app) could be more if you lose the trail at some point
- Elevation gain – 112 m.
- Hiking time – 1-3 hours (closer to 3 hours if you’re planning to take a lot of pictures)
- Difficulty – Moderate
This epic hike isn’t just a simple walk in the woods. The trail is hard to follow because it’s not marked; there are many intersecting paths, and the right one sometimes isn’t obvious. A map with turned-on GPS is necessary for this hike, and I recommend checking constantly to see if you’re still on the trail.
There are loose rocks, steep hills, and tree roots, so the best choice would be good hiking boots.

Park at the end of Saskatoon Dr, or there’s alternative parking at the end of Collins Rd. To follow the trail, I recommend using the AllTrails app. It’s very useful.
Please respect nature and leave nothing but footprints. One of the jewels of this hike is the abandoned cabin, and it’s very frustrating to see it trashed and with all the signs, so please stop destroying these beautiful places. Leave no trace!
