BURNTCOAT HEAD PARK, NOVA SCOTIA. THINGS TO DO

Burntcoat Head Park during low tide, Nova Scotia, Canada

This is one of the most spectacular places on the Canadian East Coast. Burntcoat Head Park is a stunning Nova Scotia’s gem where you can walk on the ocean floor, experience the highest tides in the world, and explore the outstanding art of nature in carved red cliffs, sea caves and mesmerizing landscapes.

What to do in Burntcoat Head Park

It’s a fantastic destination to explore. Burntcoat Head Park offers some exciting things to do:

  • Walk on the ocean floor during the low tide,
  • Enjoy the view during the high tide,
  • Explore the lighthouse,
  • Venture on short paths around the park.

These are very cool experiences. However, they are dependable on the tide schedule and open hours.

Important information. Tides and open hours

Good to know before visiting Burntcoat Head Park:

  • Tide rises and falls twice each day. The average tide is 47,5 feet (14,5 meters). So, check the tide schedule before visiting if you plan to walk on the ocean floor. It’s only accessible during low tide.
  • Lighthouse, washrooms, and gift shop are open daily from 9am to 5pm from mid-May to mid-October (times might change, so check the official website to be sure)

That’s such a great experience! Twice a day, the ocean recedes and opens its floor for us to explore. In Burntcoat Head Park, this experience is easy and comfortable. There’s a staircase that leads you to the ocean floor and a washing station to clean your shoes after the walk.

You can explore only to the right. The ocean floor to the left of the staircase has some protected species and should be untouched. But so many mesmerizing discoveries are waiting for you to the right! Incredible sea caves, carved cliffs, and mind-blowing colours and shapes will leave you speechless.

Before or after the walk on the ocean floor, it’s amazing to grasp how the landscape changes. When the tide rises, everything gets covered under the water. You can enjoy a fantastic view from the top of the lighthouse. A viewpoint near the staircase is another excellent place to see this drastic change.

There are a few interesting things inside the lighthouse: a gift shop, historical information, and fossils that you can see up close with the magnifying glass. It’s a great place to explore. But the best part is the view from the top of the lighthouse you’ll be rewarded with after climbing a narrow staircase.
