Schwerin is a beautiful, cozy city in northern Germany. It ended up being one of my favourite cities on this busy vacation. Magnificent architecture, a relaxing vibe, and a fairytale castle with a gorgeous garden are the things that made it so special. It’s a perfect destination for a day trip from Hamburg, just about an hour and a half of a pleasant train ride.
Exploring Schwerin was comfortable and mesmerizing. Old streets that bring you to another era, no crowds, vast green areas, and stunning lakes were a perfect escape from the busy cities I’d seen so far in Germany.
But of course, the central jewel of this city is a spectacular Schwerin Castle (Schweriner Schloss), which was the reason for this one-day trip. I didn’t go inside the castle, and I’m not sure it was even possible then. The exterior was gorgeous, though, despite the visible restoration equipment.
The location of the castle alone is absolutely fantastic. It stands on the island of Schwerin Lake, surrounded by lush greenery. Schwerin Castle is an architectural marvel that looks spectacular from every angle.
This place has a rich history that goes way back to 1160 when there was a fort. The Renaissance Palace was built in the 15th-17th centuries under John Albert I, Duke of Mecklenburg. Schwerin Castle was reconstructed quite a few times. It had different looks and purposes.
It used to be a Duke’s residence, a Protestant church, a museum, the seat of the state parliament, a college for kindergarten teachers and a museum. There were massive renovations between 1990 and 2019, and some restoration efforts were still ongoing before my eyes.
It’s a great idea to get lost in nature after enjoying the magnificent architecture. And you don’t have to go far! There is a beautiful garden by the palace and lots of of vast green areas behind it to relax and enjoy serenity.
