Frankfurt’s Old Town, or Altstadt – is a charming district inviting visitors on a captivating journey through centuries of history and cultural heritage. It was meticulously reconstructed after wartime destruction and now offers an array of attractions that reflect its rich past.
There are so many places that will make your head spin till you get lost in magnificent architecture everywhere you look. So here are some TOP attractions in Frankfurt’s Old Town to pay attention to.
Römerberg
At the heart of Old Town lies Römerberg, a picturesque square surrounded by charming half-timbered houses. It’s a vibrant hub for events, markets, and the iconic Römer, a medieval building complex with distinctive stepped gables.
I was blown away by how much it changes though. We were able to visit it twice:
- On the weekend, when we first landed in Frankfurt (fortunately, we had a direct flight here from Halifax, NS, Canada)
On these 2 days, despite the rainy weather, this square was vibrant with fair activities and filled with people. It was a fantastic atmosphere, but it was hard to see the buildings behind all the markets, souvenirs and people. - On our last night in Frankfurt, which happened to be on a weekday.
We came here in the evening and were surprised by the drastic change. The Römerberg was serene and almost empty. I was able to fully take in the beautiful architecture of this place without any disturbance (well, maybe, except for rain, which was a constant for us in Frankfurt, so I would recommend having a raincoat handy)
After some research, I found out that festivals and fairs are very common here, especially on the weekends, so plan accordingly to your preferred vibe.
Frankfurter Römer
The Frankfurter Römer is a prominent landmark in Frankfurt, serving as the city’s iconic town hall. Its striking facade adorned with step gables and a grand central tower makes it a visual centrepiece in the historic heart of Frankfurt. While its roots go back to the 15th century, much of the current structure is a meticulous reconstruction, blending modern functionality with the charm of its medieval past.
The Fountain of Justice

In Old Town Frankfurt, The Fountain of Justice is both an artistic marvel and a historical touchstone. This ornate fountain, intricate detailing and allegorical figures symbolize the city’s commitment to justice. Nestled within the charming streets, it serves as a refreshing reminder of the cultural depth woven into the fabric of Old Town, inviting passersby to ponder the intersection of art, history, and the enduring pursuit of fairness.
The Minervabrunnen
The Minervabrunnen, or Minerva Fountain, is a noteworthy monument in Frankfurt. Erected in 1843, it features a bronze statue of the Roman goddess Minerva, the goddess of wisdom and warfare, atop a Corinthian column.
This classical-inspired fountain is located in the city’s heart at the intersection of Stoltzestrasse and Bockenheimer Anlage. The Minervabrunnen has served as a decorative element, meeting point, and symbol of knowledge and enlightenment in Frankfurt’s urban landscape, contributing to the city’s cultural and historical ambiance.
Alte Nikolaikirche
The Alte Nikolaikirche, with its graceful silhouette, is a beacon of religious history. This old church, surviving the ravages of time, invites visitors to explore its sacred spaces and experience the spiritual essence of Old Town.
The Saalhof mit Rententurm

The Saalhof mit Rententurm is a historic ensemble that whispers tales of Frankfurt’s past. With its medieval tower, this complex provides a glimpse into the city’s evolution through the ages. Dating back to the 12th century, it comprises the Saalhof, a medieval building complex, and the Rententurm, a distinctive tower.
The Saalhof has witnessed various modifications over the centuries and offers a glimpse into Frankfurt’s evolving architectural styles. The Rententurm, standing tall, served as a toll tower and played a crucial role in monitoring and collecting river tolls.
